Throat and voice

Sore throats, voice changes and swallowing difficulties assessed thoroughly, with clear answers and the right plan.

A persistent sore throat, a hoarse voice or trouble swallowing deserves a proper look rather than repeated courses of medication. Mr Anwar examines the throat and voice box directly so nothing is missed.

Most concerns are reassuringly simple to explain and to treat. Where they are not, you will have a clear plan and, when needed, prompt onward care.

Common conditions explained

Recurrent tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is infection of the tonsils, with a sore throat, fever, difficulty swallowing and swollen glands. The occasional bout is normal, but frequent, disruptive episodes may be helped by removing the tonsils. Mr Anwar weighs how often they occur and how much they affect daily life before recommending surgery.

Hoarseness and voice problems

A hoarse, weak or tiring voice that lasts more than a few weeks deserves a proper look, since the cause ranges from simple strain or a viral illness to vocal cord nodules or reflux. The voice box is examined directly so nothing is missed and the right treatment is chosen.

Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPR)

Stomach contents and enzymes can bubble up to the throat and irritate the lining and the voice box, causing a persistent cough, a lump in the throat feeling, throat clearing and hoarseness. It is not necessarily acid, and it often comes without any heartburn at all, which is why it is missed so easily and why it is sometimes called silent reflux. In most cases it is managed with simple measures, medication and advice rather than surgery.

Swallowing difficulty

Trouble or discomfort moving food and drink from the mouth to the stomach, known as dysphagia, should always be assessed. Mr Anwar examines the throat and gullet, arranges any tests needed and explains the cause and the plan clearly.

What to expect at your appointment

  • A flexible endoscope is used to examine the throat and voice box in clinic, which takes only a moment
  • Your history guides whether reflux, voice strain or another cause is most likely
  • Onward tests or scans are arranged promptly where they are needed

Procedures explained

Tonsillectomy

Removal of the tonsils, usually for repeated infection or disturbed sleep. It is a common, well established operation, and most adults and children go home the same day, with a sore throat for a week or two as it heals.

Adenoid removal

The adenoids sit at the back of the nose and can block breathing or contribute to glue ear and infections in children. Removing them is a short day-case procedure, often alongside grommets or tonsil surgery.

Voice assessment

A close look at the vocal cords with an endoscope, sometimes with a specialist voice team, to find the reason for hoarseness and guide treatment, whether that is voice therapy, medication or minor surgery.
