Common conditions explained
Glue ear and recurrent ear infections
Glue ear, a build up of fluid behind the eardrum, is very common in young children and can dull hearing and slow speech without causing any pain. Alongside recurrent ear infections it is one of the commonest reasons children are seen, and most cases are watched carefully before any treatment is considered.
Enlarged adenoids and tonsils
Enlarged adenoids and tonsils can block a child's breathing, disturb sleep and lead to repeated infections. Where they affect sleep, growth or school, removing them can make a real difference. Mr Anwar takes an unhurried, child friendly approach to the decision.
Snoring and sleep in children
Occasional snoring during a cold is normal, but loud snoring every night, pauses in breathing, or daytime tiredness can point to obstructive sleep apnoea in children and are worth checking.
What to expect at your appointment
- A calm, child friendly examination carried out at the child's pace
- A hearing assessment where glue ear or speech delay is a concern
- A clear, parent facing explanation of the options, with treatment kept proportionate to the child
Procedures explained
Grommets
Tiny tubes placed in the eardrum to drain fluid and restore hearing in glue ear. It is a short day-case procedure, and the grommets work their own way out over time.
Adenotonsillectomy
Removal of the adenoids and tonsils together, often for disturbed sleep or repeated infection. Mr Anwar uses gentle coblation tonsillectomy where it is suitable, which can ease the recovery.
Other children's surgery
From sinus surgery to the assessment of noisy breathing, children's procedures are carried out at West Middlesex and Chelsea and Westminster, and privately at the Cromwell and the Syon Clinic.
