Snoring and sleep apnoea

Loud snoring and disturbed sleep assessed properly, so you and your partner can rest again.

Snoring is common, but it can also be the sign of a more serious problem with breathing during sleep. Mr Anwar assesses the nose, palate and airway together and arranges a sleep study where one is needed.

The goal is quieter nights and, where sleep apnoea is present, safe and effective treatment that protects your longer term health.

Common conditions explained

Snoring

Snoring is the sound of the soft tissues of the throat and nose vibrating as you breathe in your sleep. It is very common and often harmless, but it can disturb your own sleep and your partner's. Mr Anwar looks at the nose, palate and airway together to find where the noise comes from.

Obstructive sleep apnoea

In sleep apnoea the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, so breathing pauses and sleep is broken. It can leave you tired and unrefreshed by day and carries longer term health risks, so it is worth assessing properly. A sleep study measures how often this happens overnight.

A blocked nasal airway

A blocked nose, from a deviated septum, allergy or swollen turbinates, makes snoring and disturbed sleep worse by forcing you to breathe through the mouth. Improving nasal breathing is often an important part of the plan.

What to expect at your appointment

  • The nose, palate and airway are examined to find where the obstruction lies
  • A sleep study is arranged where sleep apnoea is a possibility, measuring breathing and oxygen overnight
  • Where the nose is the main problem, treating it can quieten snoring on its own

Procedures explained

Sleep study referral

An overnight test, at home or in a unit, that records breathing, oxygen and sleep to show whether snoring is simple or whether sleep apnoea is present, and how severe it is.

Nasal surgery

Where a blocked nose drives the snoring, surgery to straighten the septum or reduce the turbinates improves airflow and can make a real difference to sleep.

Palate procedures

Treatments that stiffen or reshape the soft palate can reduce the vibration that causes snoring, chosen carefully where the palate is the main source of the noise.
