Nose and septum

Nasal breathing restored, from a deviated septum and a blocked nose through to surgery that lasts.

A blocked nose is rarely just an inconvenience. It disturbs sleep, dulls everyday exertion and makes breathing harder than it should be. Where the cause is structural, such as a deviated septum or swollen turbinates, Mr Anwar looks carefully at the nasal airway before recommending treatment.

Where surgery is the right answer he favours precise, durable procedures with a clear recovery. Cosmetic and complex nasal reshaping is offered through the dedicated sister clinic, West London Rhinoplasty.

Common conditions explained

Deviated septum and a blocked nose

The septum is the wall between the nostrils, part cartilage and part bone. When it is bent, from an injury or simply the way it grew, it narrows one or both sides and makes breathing harder. Where the blockage is mechanical Mr Anwar corrects it with septal surgery, and where it comes from swelling or allergy he treats the cause first.

What to expect at your appointment

  • A fine flexible or rigid endoscope is used to examine the inside of the nose in clinic
  • The nasal airway is assessed to find where the obstruction lies
  • Nosebleeds can be cauterised on the same visit

Procedures explained

Septoplasty

Surgery to straighten a deviated septum and open the airway. It is done entirely through the nostrils with no external scars and no bruising expected, usually as a day case. Some mild bleeding and aching is normal, and no external cast is needed after septal surgery on its own.

Turbinate reduction

The turbinates are ridges inside the nose that warm and filter the air you breathe. When they are persistently swollen they block breathing, and reducing them gently improves airflow, often alongside septal surgery.
